What a 7-Stage Quality Control Process Actually Catches
“Multi-stage quality control” is a phrase almost every manufacturer's website uses. It's worth knowing what it actually means in practice, and why a defect caught early is fundamentally cheaper than one caught at the end.
Why the number of QC stages matters less than where they happen
A single final inspection catches defects after the garment is fully made -- meaning every hour of labor and every meter of fabric already went into a piece that might get rejected. Spreading checkpoints across production means a fabric flaw is caught before cutting, not after a hundred pieces are already sewn from it.
A typical 7-stage breakdown
- Fabric inspection -- GSM, shade consistency, defects, and shrinkage before cutting.
- Cutting inspection -- pattern accuracy and shade-lot grouping.
- Inline stitching QC -- stitch density, seam strength, construction method, checked during sewing.
- Print/embroidery/sublimation inspection -- color accuracy, placement tolerance, wash-fastness.
- Measurement audit -- random sampling against the approved spec sheet, with defined tolerances.
- Final finishing inspection -- thread trimming, pressing, stains, hardware function.
- Packing inspection -- carton contents matched against the buyer's actual packing instructions.
What to ask a manufacturer about their QC process
- Which of these stages do you actually run, and at what sampling rate?
- What AQL (Acceptable Quality Level) standard do you inspect against?
- Can I send my own QC inspector, or use a third-party inspection service, during production?
- What happens to a batch that fails an inline check -- is it repaired, reworked, or rejected?
