Private Label vs. OEM Apparel Manufacturing: What's Actually Different
Almost every apparel manufacturer's website lists both "private label" and "OEM" as services, often without explaining how they differ. If you're not sure which one describes what you need, the difference comes down to who owns the design.
Private label: the manufacturer's design, your brand
Private label means the manufacturer already has a base pattern, fit, or style developed, and you apply your own branding, labels, and packaging to it. You're not designing the garment from a blank page; you're customizing an existing, proven product. This is usually faster to sample and often has a lower MOQ, because the manufacturer has already done the pattern development work across other buyers.
OEM: your design, built to your spec
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) production starts from your tech pack, sketch, or reference sample. The factory builds the pattern, sources the specified fabric and trims, and manufactures to your exact construction and measurement spec. This gives you full design control, but it takes longer to sample since the pattern is being developed from scratch, and it usually needs a more complete tech pack upfront.
How to tell which one you actually need
- If you're happy adapting an existing silhouette with your own labels and colorways, that's private label; it's the faster route to market.
- If you have a specific fit, construction detail, or technical feature that doesn't exist in the manufacturer's current range, that's OEM.
- Many brands start private label for speed, then move specific hero styles to OEM once they know what's selling.
Questions worth asking before you commit to either
- Can I see the base pattern or a sample of the private-label style before ordering, not just a spec sheet?
- For OEM, how many fit-sample rounds are included before bulk production, and what does an extra round cost?
- Does the MOQ differ between the manufacturer's private-label range and a fully custom OEM style?
